In a sign of autumn as reliable as falling leaves or homecoming parades, Black Sabbath frontman and heavy metal icon Ozzy Osbourne has once again lashed out at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, asking that Sabbath be removed from consideration for induction into the Hall.

When this year's crop of nominees for induction into the Rock Hall was announced last week (see "AC/DC, Michael Jackson, Aerosmith Nominated For Rock Hall"), Black Sabbath was again on the list, and Ozzy has again reacted to the news by denouncing the Hall as a monument to critical darlings.

"Why don't they let the fans vote?" Osbourne said in a statement addressing the nomination. "As it is now, what's the point? It's a joke. It's about glad-handing and grandstanding, and I don't want any part of it."

Ozzy went on to request that the band's name be removed from the list of nominees for induction into the Rock Hall next year. Ballots will soon go out to a panel of 800 music industry professionals who will select the class of 2001 inductees.

This marks the third year that the seminal hard rock outfit has been nominated for induction into the Hall, which seems to be three too many for the notorious frontman. As forefathers of all things heavy and gloomy in rock (and an enduring influence on bands from Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, and Nirvana to modern metal acts like Pantera, Static-X, and System Of A Down), the band seems to have earned a spot in the Hall.

However, Ozzy pulled a similar move last year, issuing a statement urging the Hall to "just take our name off the list. Save the ink. Forget about us. The nomination is meaningless, because it's not voted on by the fans. It's voted on by the 'supposed' elite of the Industry and the Media, who've never bought an album or concert ticket in their lives, so their vote is totally irrelevant to me. Let's face it, Black Sabbath have never been media darlings. We're a people's band and that suits us just fine" (see "Ozzy Wants Sabbath's Name Removed From 'Meaningless' Hall Of Fame Ballot"

So what do you think? Is Ozzy shooting himself in the foot, or is this move actually more rock and roll than anything in the Hall? Should he be happy just to be nominated, or should the band have been inducted years ago?
