May 2 [16:00 EST] -- One of the surest signs of summer's approach are the radio sponsored rock festivals packed with bands.
The big-time festival season officially kicks off Friday in Atlanta when the three-day Midtown Music Festival gets underway. The weekend-long shindig, sponsored by stations 96 Rock, 99X, and V103, will feature Silverchair, the Wallflowers, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Cheap Trick, and Ben Folds Five among many others. B Rock and the Bizz, Barenaked Ladies, Cake, Dinosaur Jr., Local H, Los Lobos, Los Straightjackets, Me'shell N'degeocello, the Royal Crown Revue, Santana, Sweet 75, Gov't Mule, Johnny Lang, ZZ Top, and George Clinton and the P Funk Allstars will also be on hand this weekend.
For a full list of performers, check out the Midtown Music website at www.musicmidtown.com.
As we reported yesterday, Minneapolis' 93.7 The Edge has also set it's annual showcase, dubbed the Edgefest, for May 24. Beck, Republica, Better Than Ezra, Henry Rollins, and Iggy Pop will be on hand for that two-day festival.
And as we reported earlier this week, another highlight on the radio festival circuit is Memorial Day weekend's HFStival in Washington D.C. That gig, sponsored by the Annapolis, Maryland-based WHFS, boasts a line-up including the seemingly ubiquitous Beck, Squirrel Nut Zippers, The Prodigy, Jamiroquai, Verve Pipe, Björk, the Cardigans, and the reunited Blondie.
