When does five minus three equal zero?

When the three members of the Ben Folds Five call it quits, as the piano-based pop band announced Tuesday (October 31).

The group's publicist gave no reason for the split but said the bandmembers were putting together a statement. Ben Folds Five — featuring group leader Ben Folds, bassist Robert Sledge and drummer Darren Jessee — formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in 1994.

The critically acclaimed group released three albums, a self-titled debut in 1995, Whatever and Ever Amen in 1997 and The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner last year.

Whatever and Ever Amen spawned the surprise radio hit "Brick" [RealVideo], which helped catapult the band to national attention.

Ben Folds Five most recently appeared on the soundtrack to this year's "Me, Myself, and Irene," performing a cover of Steely Dan's "Barrytown."
