Music iconoclast Beck will play a "surprise" show on May 17 at the Galaxy Theater in Santa Ana, California, and plans to use the show to premiere songs he has been recording for his next album.

Beck, who sold out the 550 seat venue in a matter of hours, has been holed up in a studio recently with long-time collaborators the Dust Brothers and a group of Indian musicians, working on his next record for the independent label Bong Load.

In related news, both Beck's label, Geffen Records, and its parent company, BMG, have taken umbrage with a new CD of unauthorized Beck samples, entitled "Deconstructing Beck," and issued a cease and desist order against the album's manufacturer and distributor.

RTMark, the disc's distributor, claims that several Geffen officials knew about the album and that Geffen had previously informed RTMark that they wouldn't pursue any legal recourse.
