Members of the Beatles have been popping up in strange places lately (see "Alanis, Ozzy, Weiland And More On Ringo Record"), but George Harrison on Mt. Everest?
Harrison didn't summit the 29,028 foot Himalayan mountain, or even try. But the Harrison-penned Beatles' tune, "Here Comes The Sun", does figure prominently into the soundtrack of "Everest," the latest IMAX feature to hit the eight-story silver screen.
The IMAX filmakers were chronicling their summit attempt in May of 1996, the now infamous climbing season brought to world awareness by the Jon Krakauer book "Into Thin Air." Seventeen climbers went missing and eight died in one day. The IMAX crew put down its specially-designed IMAX camera and contributed to the rescue of two climbers.
The team decided to press on in the wake of the tragedy, and made it to the top of Everest a few weeks later on May 23. Despite the recent deaths, the filmmakers say they didn't want to focus on the accident, but the awesome spiritual and geological presence of the mountain itself.
Enter composers Steve Wood and Daniel May's orchestral version of "Here Comes the Sun."
"To me, that's a real sign of optimism and hope," director (and five-time summiter) Breashears told MTV News. "I think some people have developed a very negative attitude about Everest. And when you see what we did, against all odds, and that team, it's an appropriate way to end the film on hope that it's a great mountain, a great place to test yourself. It doesn't have to be about death and hopelessness."
"Everest" is open in major cities now. Visit www.macfreefilms.com for openings at an IMAX screen near you.
