A Tribe Called Quest, the Foo Fighters, the Fugees, the Indigo Girls, Joan Osborne, John Popper, Busta Rhymes and Ani DiFranco are among the artists that have been tapped to select the winners for this year's "John Lennon Songwriting Contest."
Applications are now being taken for the second edition of the contest, which was launched last April by music executive David Sonneberg with the blessing of Yoko Ono and the estate of John Lennon.
The contest drew several thousand respondents last year, and both amateur and professional artists are invited to submit original songs in 12 categories: Rock, Pop, Folk, Hip-Hop, R&B, World, Jazz, Latin, Gospel, Dance, Country and Children's.
The grand prize winners from each category are selected by a panel of music artists, and winners receive a $2,000 cash prize, $5,000 in Yamaha equipment, and a $5,000 cash advance on a publishing contract from EMI.
