Even though the Barenaked Ladies were formed in Toronto almost 10 years ago, the Canadian quintet has just begun to see its popularity crest in the States, thanks to last year's breakthrough album, "Stunt."
Tonight the recent bout of American fame comes to a head for the Barenaked Ladies, whose "One Week" single is up for a Grammy for "Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal."
During the Gibson Guitar Awards in Los Angeles on Tuesday, bassist Jim Creeggan commented on the group's suddenly widespread recognition in the U.S. and its effects outside this hemisphere.
"We really had a wave of popularity in Canada for a while, and it's just starting to come back, now that we've had a wave of popularity in the U.S.," he said. "But it is funny -- it1s almost like we went to the pre-school of how to be popular, or 'What to do when your record goes gold?'"
"Because we could be popular [in Canada] and then in the U.S., people wouldn't really notice us," he added, "but now that we've gotten big here, the whole world goes, 'Oh, jeez, what's goin' on with the Barenaked Ladies?'"
After an appearance at tonight's Grammy awards, the Barenaked Ladies will enjoy a little down time before heading off to the U.K. in April and May to open for the Beautiful South.
