Feb. 25 [Updated 15:00 EST] -- Twenty-five-year-old Dallas native Erykah Badu has an unconventional sound, and a similarly unique approach to videos.
The road less-traveled seems to be working for Badu, who startled a lot of people this week by debuting at number two on the Billboard album chart with her first release, "Baduism."
"The era of the video is an era that I feel really close to," (QuickTime, 3.9MB) Badu told MTV News while she was on the set of "The Jenny McCarthy Show" filming an upcoming appearance.
"I've always wanted to see myself in that era. Unfortunately the only reference that we have to that era is 'The Color Purple' so there's a lot of 'Color Purple'-isms in the Erykah Badu 'Badu-ism' 'On And On' video and that's great. I invite all of the energies from all of the millions of atoms of everything that I've seen that has inspired me to play a part in this project."
All that energy appears to be paying off as "On And On" is ranked at number 15 on the Billboard singles chart this week.
