September 30 [16:00 EDT] -- Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds' first venture into the film business is a major hit. According to the weekend box office receipts, his movie "Soul Food" debuted in the second top grossing spot overall pulling in a remarkable $11.4 million, second only to The Peacemaker with George Clooney. Soul Food, about the trials and tribulations of a family in Chicago, was shown at 1338 theaters.

The news should go a long ways in cheering up Edmonds who's likely still smarting from his recent rejection by the Rolling Stones. The Babyface-produced version of the song "Already Over Me," with its rhythm loops and keyboard programs was replaced by a 'live off the floor' at Mick Jagger's request.

Edmonds isn't turning his back on music--he has a full production schedule--but his film company has more movie projects on the burner. It was recently announced that he will be co-producing both the motion picture and the soundtrack for a remake of the cult flick The Idolmaker, a fictional account of a songwriter-turned-rock producer directing his clients to pop idol status. The story is based on Bob Marcucci, who guided Frankie Avalon and Fabian to fame and fortune in the fifties.
