Jaunuary 6 [Updated 12:00 EDT] -- When nominations for the 40th annual Grammy Awards were announced Tuesday morning, Babyface once again lead the pack with eight nominations, but Paula Cole turned heads by earning four of her seven nods in each of the four major Grammy categories.
Babyface, who earned a record 12 Grammy nominations last year, is at the head of the Grammy class again this year, but not by much. Cole and Puff Daddy both came close on the heels of Babyface with seven nominations apiece.
Cole's "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone" earned nominations for Record of the Year and Song of the Year while her album, "This Fire," is up for Album of the Year. Cole will also vie for Best New Artist honors against Erykah Badu, Fiona Apple, Hanson, and Puff Daddy.
In addition to Best New Artist, Puffy also finds himself in the running for Best R&B Song (as co-writer of Mariah Carey's "Honey"), Best Rap Album both for his "No Way Out" and as producer of the Notorious B.I.G.'s "Life After Death." Puffy also picked up three nominations for Best Rap Performance By a Duo or Group for "I'll Be Missing You," "Can't Nobody Hold Me Down," and Biggie's "Mo Money Mo Problems."
The nominees were rattled off by Fiona Apple, Usher, Paula Cole, Wyclef Jean, Clint Black, Deana Carter, Shawn Colvin and Diana Krall at New York's Radio City Music Hall where the awards will be handed out on February 25. Kelsey Grammer will be on hand to host.
