Though she confessed to stage fright recently, soulful songwriter Fiona Apple will face audiences across North America in a 19-stop tour that begins February 24 in Connecticut.

"I'm the girl who doesn't know how to speak in public places," she said at a Chicago show, following the November release of her sophomore LP. The album, whose 90-word title is often shortened to "When the Pawn ...," shows none of the timidity she professes to have. Her lyrics on such songs as "Limp" are fierce, and throughout the album she boldly expresses a range of emotions.

Apple's musical arrangements also have grown more confident since "Tidal,"her 1996 multiplatinum debut. On her latest offering, she branches out stylistically, with songs such as "Mistake" using a fuller, psychedelic-tinged backing.

"When the Pawn... " has remained in the top half of the "Billboard" 200 albums chart since it debuted at number 13 eight weeks ago.
