With the Labor Day weekend just behind us, appropriately enough, word comes that songstress Tori Amos has given birth to a baby girl.

The baby, as yet unnamed, was born on September 5. She weighed in at 7 pounds, 1 ounce and measured 21 inches.

She's the first child for Amos, 37, and her British recording engineer husband, Mark Hawley. Her pregnancy had been kept under wraps until the child was born. The couple had previously suffered a miscarriage.

Amos hasn't toured since late in 1999.

A statement released by her label, Atlantic Records, on September 6 read, "Upon feeding her daughter for the first time, Tori noted that 'an ounce of breast milk is even more potent than the finest tequila.'"

Amos has previously likened her recordings to children. Her last release was "To Venus And Back," a double album containing one disc of brand new studio material and another of live recordings from her 1998 tour (see ).

Location and time of the child's birth were not released to the public. Calls to the singer's reps were not returned as of press time.
