August 26 [14:00 EDT] -- As unattributed chatter continues to spread from the Internet to radio stations across the country that Alice In Chains frontman Layne Staley has lost a couple of fingers to gangrene, the band's management tells MTV News that it's completely untrue.
Nevertheless, the rumor has been percolating for about a year now, and perhaps gained momentum after Staley told "Rolling Stone" magazine in February of 1996 that he sometimes injected heroin in his hands. The rumors were probably further fueled by Staley's penchant for wearing gloves in public.
Despite all that though, an Alice In Chains management rep told MTV News, "I visited Layne the other day, and he's fine... and he's got all his fingers."
His band, meanwhile, is on hiatus at the moment while guitarist Jerry Cantrell finishes a solo album that's due to be release dearly next year.
