Kent Nagano Named Conductor Of Los Angeles Opera

Domingo says new plans for L.A. Opera are on the way.

Plácido Domingo, artistic director designate of the Los Angeles Opera, announced the appointment of Kent Nagano as principal conductor.

The California-born Nagano will take on these duties in July 2001 in addition to his upcoming role as music director of Berlin's Deutsche Symphonie.

"Kent is one of the most important figures in today's music world. ... I am tremendously excited about the collaboration," Domingo said in a statement.

He added that there would soon be some "far-reaching plans" announced concerning their collaboration when Domingo officially takes on his post in July.

Also in the statement, Nagano said, "The intense discussions between us which followed gave birth to a most exciting and unique artistic conception of a company that could exist in the city of Los Angeles."
