World-renowned English DJ Gilles Peterson will play nine U.S. shows this summer, beginning Aug. 9 in Detroit, in support of his upcoming double mix-CD, INCredible Sound of Gilles Peterson, due Aug. 8.
The Swiss-born, South Londonbased DJ will swing through Chicago, Washington, D.C., New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Seattle before wrapping up the tour in Boulder, Colo., Aug. 21.
INCredible Sound documents Peterson's encyclopedic knowledge of
urban music, revealing his pioneering "rare groove" DJ style of
highlighting the musical connections between cool jazz, bossa nova, soul and drum & bass. The continuously mixed CDs span the '60s soul jazz of Jimmy Smith to the two-step styles of MJ Cole.
Peterson also released Desert Island Mix in 1997, as part of the
long-running "Journeys by DJ" mix series.
The DJ's weekly broadcast on BBC Radio 1 is syndicated globally, placing Peterson among the most widely heard DJs in the world. In 1988 he founded the record label Acid Jazz, whose releases fused sleek jazz,
soul-influenced vocals, hip-hop beats and funky basslines, transforming the label moniker into a new musical genre. Recognized for his vision of future jazz, Peterson also compiled collections for the legendary jazz imprints Blue Note and Prestige.
Talkin' Loud, which Peterson started in 1990, released influential
records by drum & bass producers Roni
Size and 4 Hero, and also reissued several out-of-print albums by Afrobeat legend
