Elliott Smith, Jill Sobule, Tracy Bonham Top Week's New Releases

Also hitting stores is ex-Jodeci member Dalvin DeGrate's solo debut, Met.a.Mor.Phic.

Albums from singer/songwriters Elliott Smith, Jill Sobule and Tracy Bonham highlight this week's album releases.

Smith delivers his fifth solo album, Figure 8, which features the single "Son of Sam" (RealAudio excerpt). The album was produced by Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf, who also produced Smith's critically acclaimed XO (1998).

Sobule plays most of the instruments on her fourth LP, Pink Pearl. The singer first gained mainstream recognition for her single "I Kissed a Girl," off her self-titled 1995 album. Her most recent LP was 1997's Happy Town.

After nearly four years, Bonham returns with Down Here, a 12-song effort that features the single "Behind Every Good Woman."

It is her first album since 1996's The Burdens of Being Upright, which went gold with the help of the hit "Mother Mother."

"The message of this record is 'Just be yourself,' " Bonham said in a statement. "On my last record, I dealt with the pain of a destructive relationship and the issues you face in your early 20s. Now I'm more confident and comfortable with myself. These new songs dig deep and help me accept myself for who I am."

Former Jodeci member Dalvin DeGrate makes his solo debut with Met.a.Mor.Phic, featuring the single "Why Can't We" (RealAudio excerpt).

"I wanted to talk about the upside and the pitfalls of being in love," the 28-year-old singer said of the album's themes. "I wanted to take the things I've gone through and seen my friends go through and make them come to life."
