Lee Konitz, 72, has finally recorded a disc devoted solely to his own tunes. Sound of Surprise confirms what fans already know: The alto saxophonist's writing is as witty and graceful as his playing. The album's real surprise is tenor saxophonist Ted Brown, who, like Konitz, comes out of pianist Lennie Tristano's school of cerebral bop. Brown's banter with Konitz on selections such as "Blues Suite" (RealAudio excerpt) is smart, subtle and swinging. Guitarist John Abercrombie, bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joey Baron offer sterling support throughout.
