Former Deee-Lite DJ Towa Tei will release Last Century Modern, his third solo album, on May 23.
The album features guest appearances by such prominent artists as French duo Les Nubians, DJ Die (of Roni Size's Reprazent) and Jumpin' Jack Frost (of the UK's Planet V drum & bass crew). The latter collaborate with Tei on a track that ventures into drum & bass, which is new territory for the Japanese producer.
Tei's 1998 album, Sound Museum, spawned the Grammy-nominated single "Happy," which reached No. 3 on Billboard's dance chart.
Viv, the female vocalist on "Happy," returns as a guest soloist on Last Century Modern, along with New York's Wizdom Life, who was featured on a remix of the Beastie Boys' "Body Movin'."
Tei made a rare U.S. appearance March 25 at the Winter Music Conference in Miami Beach, Fla. No other tour dates have been announced.
Deee-Lite was a multinational dance-pop trio that devoured radio waves in 1990 with "Groove Is in the Heart," a groundbreaking, infectious single that mixed '70s disco grooves with house beats.
