Drum & bass maestros Roni Size and DJ Die have put together a remix of New York rapper Pharoahe Monch's hip-hop hit "Simon Says."
The remix, which Rawkus Entertainment plans to release as a single next month, takes the song's quirky, bass-heavy strings-and-horns riff and surrounds it with a relentless, chaotic drum loop and eerie cymbals. Pharoahe Monch's echoed vocals soar above the mix.
Size and DJ Die, who work in England, have experimented previously with using vocals. They collaborated with singer Leonie Laws as Breakbeat Era on last year's live-instrumentation drum & bass record Ultra-Obscene. Laws sang conventional pop-influenced choruses on that album.
Pharoahe Monch, a former member of the underground group Organized Konfusion, saw "Simon Says" (RealAudio excerpt) become a staple on hip-hop radio and in clubs last year. The song is known for its "Get the fuck up!" refrain.
The single also includes an instrumental version of the new track.
