Tool Side Band Sets Warm-Up Gig

A Perfect Circle, featuring Maynard James Keenan, to play Los Angeles club before hitting road with Nine Inch Nails.

The rock band formed by Tool singer Maynard James Keenan, A Perfect Circle, will play a show at the Key Club in Los Angeles on April 5 to help the group warm up for its opening slot on the Nine Inch Nails tour.

The band will release its debut album, Mer de Noms, on May 23. The first single, "Judith," is slated to hit radio in mid-April.

In addition to Keenan, the band features former Tool guitar tech Billy Howerdel as well as bassist Paz Lenchantin, drummer Josh Freese (Vandals, Guns N' Roses) and guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen.

While A Perfect Circle tours, the rest of Tool will work on the follow-up to Aenima (1996), which included such tracks as "Jimmy" (RealAudio excerpt) and "Stinkfist" (RealAudio excerpt), according to Tool manager Ted Gardner. All the songs for that album are written, Gardner said.

The Nine Inch Nails tour begins April 12 in Cleveland.
