Roy Haynes' Trio Strikes Balance

There is an art of Japanese flower arranging, ikebana, which emphasizes form and balance. The Roy Haynes Trio Featuring Danilo Perez and John Patitucci does the same, especially on Duke Ellington's "Prelude to a Kiss" and Thelonious Monk's "Bright Mississippi." Patitucci's virtuosic bass playing tends to be antiseptic but balances well against Perez's Monk-ish Latin playing and the leader's aggressive, swinging drumming.
