Erykah Badu is working on the follow-up to 1997's Baduizm, which spawned the hit "On & On" (RealAudio excerpt).
The long break between albums came because the R&B singer was raising her son, who is now 2, Badu said backstage at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles last month.
"I promised him I'd give him those two years to kind of get him under way," Badu said. "Now he's allowed me to come out and bless the world with some new music."
Badu also released the concert recording Live, in 1997. No title or release date has been set for the new album.
Badu won a Grammy this year for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for her appearance on the Roots' "You Got Me" (RealAudio excerpt), which was on the hip-hop group's 1999 album, Things Fall Apart. She said the award was "for all the people who never get the opportunity to inspire people."
