Mix Master Mike, Roots' Rahzel Pair Up For U.S. Tour

Turntablist, beatbox artist plan to hit 37 cities on spring outing.

DJ Mix Master Mike will team up with Rahzel, vocal percussionist for the Roots, for a 37-city tour kicking off on March 14 in Detroit.

The duo will swing out to the West Coast and circle back through the South and New England before finishing on May 1 in Philadelphia.

Mix Master Mike stepped into the spotlight on the Beastie Boys' Hello Nasty (1998), showing off his scratches and quick cuts on "Three MCs and One DJ" (RealAudio excerpt). That same year he released Anti-Theft Device, a debut album that showcased his turntable wizardry on such tracks as "Can of Kick Ass" (RealAudio excerpt).

Rahzel, a member of the instrument-based hip-hop group the Roots, released The Fifth Element: Make the Music 2000 in July. The album is an attempt to make the beatbox — the art of creating a range of sounds with the voice — a feature musical form. On songs such as "All I Know" (RealAudio excerpt), he switches between rhymes and his ever-surprising vocal effects.

Mix Master Mike will release Eye Uv the Cyklops, a four-song EP, on March 21.
