'Calle Santana' Planned For Tijuana, Mexico

Downtown street where young Santana played guitar for change may be renamed.

City officials in Tijuana, Mexico, are aiming to rename a downtown street after

city native Carlos Santana, whose namesake band tied a record Wednesday

(Feb. 23) when they won eight Grammy Awards on the strength of last June's

Supernatural. Two streets under consideration for bearing the new name

"Calle Santana" are Revolucion Avenue, where the young Santana sold gum and

played guitar on the streets, or Fifth Street, where he grew up. Jaime Chaidez,

spokesperson for the city's Municipal Institute of Arts and Culture, said

Tijuana is planning to name streets after several favorite natives, but Carlos

Santana, with his recent resurgence in fame, is a priority.
