Book Plots Mogul David Geffen's Rise

'The Operator' examines success of label head and former Neil Young manager.

A new book titled "The Operator: David Geffen Builds, Buys and Sells the New Hollywood" aims to plot the rise and phenomenal success of the music-industry mogul. The founder of Geffen Records (John Lennon, Elton John) was instrumental in the careers of classic rockers such as Neil Young, Jackson Browne and the Eagles. Penned by Wall Street Journal reporter Tom King, the work is due March 7. King conducted more than 300 interviews for his research, he told the Journal, including many with people who he said worried about inflaming Geffen's well-known temper.
