Don McLean Praises Madonna's 'American Pie'

Song's author calls dance-pop diva's version 'a gift from a goddess.'

Madonna's electronica-tinged version of the 1971 song "American Pie" is "a gift from a goddess," the song's author, Don McLean, said. In a statement released through Madonna's record label, Maverick, McLean praised her recording as "sensual and mystical." Madonna's "American Pie," which is on the soundtrack of her upcoming film "The Next Best Thing," was the most-added song on two radio formats last week. Singer/songwriter McLean's other hits include "Vincent," a tribute to painter Vincent Van Gogh.
