Tina Turner Ready To Shake Up Stage One Last Time

Legendary performer to hit 40 North American cities in exhaustive final tour.

Tina Turner has mapped out what she's calling her final tour, 44 years after first rocking onstage with the groundbreaking Ike Turner Revue.

The singer said on her official Web site (www.tina-turner.com) that she is not retiring, but this will be her last extensive tour. The five-month trek includes 60 shows, beginning March 21 in Minneapolis and hitting 40 cities in North America. She'll then head to Europe for 16 dates.

Turner, popularly referred to as "the hardest-working legs in show business," was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991.

"There's not a female performer in pop music that doesn't owe something to Tina Turner," said Howard Kramer, an associate curator at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland. "In the '60s there was nothing like [the Ike and Tina Turner Revue] — nothing as brazen, as energetic and with a woman at the front. Women were cajoled and instructed to be far more demure. ... She knocked down the door."

Initially a backup singer in Ike Turner's traveling soul-music review, Tina Turner (born Annie Mae Bullock) soon became the star of the show, singing on hits including "A Fool in Love" (1961) and "Proud Mary" (RealAudio excerpt).

After divorcing Ike Turner in 1976, she disappeared from the spotlight for several years before returning in the mid-'80s with the hits "What's Love Got to Do With It" (RealAudio excerpt) and "We Don't Need Another Hero."

Turner released Twenty Four Seven, a project inspired by her work on last year's VH1 "Divas Live" show, on Feb. 1. Released last fall in Europe with the single "When the Heartache Is Over" (RealAudio excerpt) the album has sold 2 million copies overseas.

R&B singer Lionel Richie will appear as a special guest throughout the tour.
