Ben Harper Going Back Out On Road

Guitarist will tour U.S., Europe starting next week with his band, the Innocent Criminals.

Ben Harper, the soulful roots rocker who first made his name as a live

performer, will take his energetic show back on the road beginning Jan.

27 in Charleston, S.C.

Harper will head up the East Coast before crossing the country on a

22-stop U.S. trek that will end Feb. 26 in Los Angeles. In March he'll

start a European leg that will include 24 shows in Portugal, Spain, France

and Switzerland. Harper also toured extensively last year.

Harper, a guitar virtuoso who began performing as a boy, signed his first

record contract after opening for such blues artists as Taj Mahal and

Brownie McGhee. His first album, Welcome to the Cruel World (1994),

featured politically minded folk songs, including "Don't Take That Attitude

to Your Grave" (RealAudio

excerpt).

With September's Burn to Shine, his fourth album, the singer/guitarist

continued to explore the roots of rock, moving from hard-edged blues to

the Dixieland style of "Suzie Blue" (RealAudio

excerpt).

Harper's studio band, the Innocent Criminals, will back him throughout

the outing.
