Best Of '99: Courting Controversy

SonicNet Music News followed the year's controversies as everyone from parents to the president to the former Prince got involved.

During the holiday season, SonicNet Music News is featuring a "Best

of '99" series. We are using the occasion to look back at some of the

year's best stories, as chosen by our writers and editors. The "Best of

'99" series features one of 16 categories each day, through Jan. 2.

In this installment, we remember the year's biggest controversies.

Ever since Ed Sullivan ordered his cameras off the gyrating hips of Elvis

Presley, the provocations of rock 'n' roll have incited outraged reactions.

That continued in 1999, with Marilyn Manson on the receiving end of flying

accusations in the wake of the Columbine High School tragedy, Jerry Falwell

turning his attention from Tinky Winky to the Lilith Fair, and lawmakers

demanding that record stores divulge lyrics to parents.

The year also saw music publications tangled up in controversy: A

Blaze editor claimed to have been fired for supporting a friend

charged with murder, parents in Wisconsin tried to keep Rolling

Stone from their children, and The Artist sued a fanzine for the use of

his name and picture.
