Farm Aid gave a $611,000 Christmas present to family farmers this week with grants to 57 family-farm organizations in 32 states, according to organizers. The charity, formed 15 years ago by country singer/songwriter Willie Nelson and rockers Neil Young and John Mellencamp, has distributed more than $718,000 this year, much of it raised by the 1999 Farm Aid concert in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 15, which featured the Dave Matthews Band, Barenaked Ladies, Nelson, Young and Mellencamp. The organization says it has given away more than $15 million overall.
