Culture Committee Downgraded To Task Force

A committee on American culture proposed by Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan.,

will be downgraded to a task force when the U.S. Senate votes to create

it next week, according to Erik Hotmire, Brownback's secretary. Hotmire

said a committee would have had the power to subpoena witnesses, something

that made several other senators balk. The task force, made up of four

Republicans and four Democrats, would explore national culture, including

entertainment. In May, Brownback held hearings to examine violence in

music, video games, videos and movies. He also was one of 10 senators

who signed a letter to the Universal Music Group urging it not to market

albums by shock-rocker Marilyn Manson to children following the

April 20 attack at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., that left

15 people dead.
