Pope John Paul II tried on Bono's wraparound sunglasses during a

meeting with the U2 singer Thursday morning (Sept. 23) in

Castelgandolfo, Italy, according to Reuters. Bono was part of a

delegation from the charity coalition Jubilee 2000 — also scheduled

to include ex–Boomtown Rats singer Bob Geldof and

veteran producer Quincy Jones — that met with the pope to

discuss the cause of Third World debt cancellation. The pope also gave a

speech Thursday morning endorsing Jubilee 2000's goal of persuading the

world's richest countries to celebrate the advent of the millennium by

forgiving the massive debt owed them by the world's poorest, according

to a transcript of his remarks released by the coalition. Reuters

quoted Bono (born Paul Hewson) as saying, "(The pope's) everyday courage

amazes me. As aged as he is and as infirm as he has been, he will, you

know, hang out with a bunch of pop stars."
