The Artist Previews Album, Plays Set

The Artist, Camille Yarbrough, Master P, U2, Iggy Pop, Godsmack, Alanis Morissette, David Bowie, Lenny Kravitz ...

The Artist premiered songs from his upcoming album, Rave Un2

the Joy Fantastic (Nov. 2), for reporters and label executives Thursday

afternoon (Sept. 16) at a New York theater, then played a 45-minute set

of funk and soul covers and his own "I Could Never Take the Place of Your

Man" with the New Power Generation. Songs such as "Undisputed,"

"Baby Knows" and "The Greatest Romance Ever Sold" —

scheduled to be released as a single in two weeks — mix futuristic

funk beats with guitar lines recalling the days when the Artist was known

as Prince. Prince, in fact, is credited with playing all the

instruments and singing the title track, which features his falsetto

voice over a metronomic beat. Guests on the album include rappers

Chuck D of Public Enemy and Eve of the Ruff

Ryders, singer/songwriter Sheryl Crow and singer Gwen

Stefani of the ska-pop band No Doubt.
