Talvin Singh Wins 1999 Mercury Prize

India-rooted remixer, tabla player and electronic musician Talvin

Singh has won the 1999 Mercury Music Prize for his debut solo album,

OK (1998), awards organizers announced Tuesday (Sept. 7). The

Mercury prize is Britain's most prestigious pop-music honor. Singh beat

out 11 competitors, including Beth Orton, Blur,

Stereophonics and Manic Street Preachers. Past Mercury

winners include Gomez (1998), Roni Size (1997),

Pulp (1996) and Portishead (1995).
