Viacom said Tuesday (Sept. 7) it would buy the television broadcast
company CBS Corporation in the largest potential media merger in history.
The $37 billion deal would give Viacom access to one of the largest
groups of U.S. radio stations in addition to acquiring the CBS network,
one of the "big three" U.S. broadcasters. CBS's mature audience would
stretch Viacom's demographic well beyond the company's youth-oriented
MTV and Nickelodeon networks. Viacom also is SonicNet's parent company.
