New York hip-hop duo Black Star performed three shows over the holiday weekend (Sept. 46) at the Knitting Factory, a Manhattan club, to raise money for Nkiru Books, the African-American bookstore they own in Brooklyn. They were joined by several guests, including Roots drummer ?uestlove and underground rapper Wordsworth, according to Knitting Factory spokesperson Guy Compton. All three concerts sold out the 400-capacity club. Black Star's Mos Def and Talib Kweli bought the bookstore, where Kweli once worked, last year. The duo are known in New York for their activism and for lyrics that touch on black nationalism.
