Guitarist Franz Stahl has officially left the Foo Fighters.

The band, which is working on its third album, described the parting as

"amicable but necessary," according to a press release. Stahl, who earlier

played with Foo Fighters leader and former Nirvana drummer

Dave Grohl in the Washington, D.C., hardcore band Scream,

replaced Pat Smear in September 1997. Stahl's replacement has not

been announced. His departure and the band's recording schedule led the

band to cancel its appearance at Woodstock '99. The new album is due in

the fall.
