Coalition Adopts Specs For Digital Players

The Secure Digital Music Initiative, a coalition of music and technology companies, has adopted copyright-protection standards for portable digital-music players such as the Rio MP3 player. The specifications, adopted last week, will be introduced in two phases if ratified by the full SDMI body early next month. Phase I players will allow any type of music to be listened to, regardless of whether it was legitimately obtained. Phase II players, to be introduced at an undetermined date, will play all existing digital-music formats, including MP3, but will not play pirated versions of future releases.
