Songwriter and author Shel Silverstein died Monday (May 10) in
Florida of an apparent heart attack. He was 68. Though he released several
albums, Silverstein's best-known songs were hits for others: "A Boy Named
Sue," which was country singer Johnny Cash's biggest pop hit, and
"Sylvia's Mother" and "The Cover of 'Rolling Stone' " for the '70s band
Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show. Silverstein was more famous still
as the irreverent author of such children's classics as "The Giving Tree"
(1964) and "Where the Sidewalk Ends" (1974).
