By several accounts, R&B diva Aretha Franklin stole the spotlight
at the 85th annual White House Correspondents' Association Dinner in
Washington, D.C., on Saturday (May 1). The Queen of Soul performed
"Respect" and other hits for an audience that included President Clinton,
MC Hammer, assorted Hollywood glitterati and others. "By the time
she finished, many of the 2,700 revelers were on their feet, gyrating to
the music and waving white linen napkins over their heads," wrote a
Washington Times reporter.
