The fanzine Uptown, which The Artist Formerly Known As
Prince sued in February for the unauthorized use of his symbol name
and other alleged infractions, countersued in New York on Friday (April
9). "This case represents a brazen attempt to curtail and chill
legitimate public commentary about [The Artist]," said Uptown's
lawyers. Representatives for The Artist could not be reached for comment.
The suit seeks damages as well as a declaration that the musician has
no copyright or trademark claims to the symbol that has served as his
name since 1993.
