IBM scheduled a press conference in New York Monday morning (Feb. 8) to unveil a new copy-protected downloadable music system. According to published reports, the company will launch a six-month trial program in San Diego allowing cable subscribers there to download albums from the Internet with high-speed cable modems; a new technology would prevent the files from being copied and redistributed. The program, dubbed the Madison Project, was developed in conjunction with the world's five major record companies: Sony, Time Warner, EMI, Bertelsmann and UMG.
