Atlanta Rhythm Section Singer Shot

Ronnie Hammond, lead singer of veteran Southern rockers the Atlanta

Rhythm Section, was shot by a police officer in Macon, Ga., last week after he

threatened the officer with an ax and a claw hammer. Hammond, 48, underwent

emergency surgery at the Medical Center of Central Georgia following the Dec. 28

incident. Police in Macon said officers and rescue workers were responding to reports of

an attempted suicide by Hammond at 3978 Mathis St. around 8 p.m. when Hammond,

who had earlier cut one of his wrists, lunged toward the officer with the weapons.
