Grammy-winning rapper Coolio (born Artis Leon Ivey, Jr.) avoided jail time but received six months' probation and a $30,000 fine after being convicted in a German court Thursday (Dec. 3) of being an accessory to robbery and causing bodily injury, the Associated Press reports. The singer and members of his band The 40 Thievs were accused of stealing clothing valued at $940 from a Stuttgart boutique hosting a publicity event for the "Gangsta's Paradise" rapper in November 1997; the boutique's owner said Coolio punched her when she tried to stop him. The rapper characterized the incident as a misunderstanding, according to the AP. He faced a maximum sentence of four years in jail.
