Skatalite Alphonso Dead at 67

Rolando Alphonso, founding tenor saxophonist for Jamaica's Skatalites, died Friday in Los Angeles from complications related to brain aneurysms; he was 67. As an influential member of the pioneering ska outfit, Alphonso was bestowed Jamaica's "Order Of Distinction" in 1977, was nominated for Grammy Awards in 1994 and 1996 and served as an inspiration for many of the bands in the current American ska revival. Earlier this year, Skatalite trumpeter and sax player Tommy McCook died from complications related to pneumonia.
