Michael Franti and Spearhead are taking their words and music to the road this
month and next, but in some cases, it will be one without the other.
group, whose recently-released sophomore album, Chocolate Supa Highway
is a potent, earthy mix of funk, reggae, rap and a healthy dose of blunted
beats and rhymes, will co-headline a tour with hot rap combo Camp Lo starting
May 2 in Santa Cruz, California, which is preceded by a solo spoken word tour
from Franti that began yesterday in San Francisco.
Beatnig/Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy member is touring the country under the
banner of "Smokin' Words" in April to celebrate National Poetry Month with a
series of performances/CD signings, some of which will feature a collaboration
with world music collective Zap Mama, on whose new album Franti performs and
co-produces a few tracks.
The tour with Camp Lo will find Spearhead
fleshed out with an eight-member live band and will feature an opening set from
new hip-hop brass band, Coolbone.
