Dino Jr, Morphine Play UnVailed Fest

But can they snowboard?

The rock/skiing connection gets deeper this weekend with the clumsily titled

"Sam Goody's UnVailed: The Ultimate Band and Board Event." The three-day

festival, which kicked off yesterday (March 27) and cruises through Saturday,

March 29th is taking place in Vail, Colorado and features sets from L7,

Dinosaur Jr., Morphine, the Bloodhound Gang, Leah Andreone, Rusted Root and a

quartet of unsigned bands vying for their shot to become the next big

thing.

The unsigned bands, Minnesota's Propeller, Michigan's The

Exceptions, Washington's Salmon Davis and New York's Punk Drunk Monkeys are

vying for a $10,000 prize and an appearance on an unnamed nationally syndicated

TV show, which the Sam Goody's says will put the band in "more households than

MTV."

The event will also feature snowboarding competitions and prizes,

the winners of which will also appear in the unnamed show. Tickets are $25 for

both nights ($15 each), with two of the unsigned bands and three signed acts

performing each night.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of a

compilation CD from the event, UnVailed 1997, which features five of the

six headliners and "five other hard-edged alternative acts," will go to S.O.S.

(Snowboard Outreach Society), a nonprofit group that works with at-risk

youth.
