You Say It's Your Birthday: L7's Gail Greenwood

Cover art from L7's latest album, The Beauty Process.

Today is the birthday of Gail Greenwood, bassist for L7,

who was born in 1960 in Providence, Rhode Island. Although Greenwood recently

joined the all-woman punk-thrash outfit L7, she may be best known thus far for

her work with Belly, the poppy, fairy-tale inspired group which scored hits

with "Gipetto" and "Feed the Tree."

Belly was founded by former Throwing

Muses guitarist and vocalist Tanya Donnelly, and was comprised of brothers Tom

and Chris Gorman and bassist Fred Abong, whom Greenwood replaced after the

release of their 1993 debut Star. Belly's 1995 release King was a

smash hit, but the group broke up in 1996.

When L7's founding bassist

Jennifer Finch left that band to go back to college, they asked Greenwood to

join. L7's latest album, The Beauty Process, which was released February
