That other Australian teen rocker, Ben Lee, is
about to hit the road as the opening act for the Lemonheads, in a set that is
sure to preview some of the 20-odd songs he recorded for his sophomore solo
album, due in April.
The still-untitled offering, recorded this past Dec.
at the Beastie Boys' G-Son studios with Brad Wood (Liz Phair, Veruca Salt), is
described by the folks at Grand Royal as being "very folk-oriented" and
"rootsier" than Lee's work with his now-defunct teen trio, Noise Addict.
As ATN reported previously, the CD will feature guest spots from a number
of GR associates, including Wood himself on drums and bass, Beastie Mike D
(drums), Hole's Melissa Auf Der Maur (backing vocals on two songs), Petra
Hayden (violin, cello), Al Bloch (brother of the Fastbacks' Kurt Bloch and
member of My Favorite Martian), playing bass on one track, Grand Royal staff
member Jamie Fraser (theremin) and Patrick Yonally of the band Johnny Go!,
playing some slide guitar.
This tour also marks 18-year-old Lee's first as
a high school graduate, so no more cramming for exams between gigs.
