Is It The Breeders Or The Amps? Your Call

A band led by Kim Deal and billed as The Breeders will perform two year-end

shows in Northern California. When ATN spoke with Kim's sister Kelly Deal last

month and asked her for Breeders' news, she said, "The Breeders are

Kim's band, you'll have to ask her."

Fair enough, but is it the Breeders

if Kelly's not there? Sure, we guess. But is it the Breeders if Josephine Wiggs

isn't there either? Um, maybe. But is it the Breeders, if, it's, uh, the Amps?

Kim Deal currently plans to hit the stage at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz,

CA on Dec. 30 with Breeder Jim MacPherson on drums, Nate Farley on guitar and

Louis Lerma on bass, the same line-up she took on the road last year as the

"The Breeders have always revolved around Kim," was our Elektra

Records source's explanation, although she couldn't say whether the band would

play Breeders material, Amps material, or a mix of both. (The Breeders record

for Elektra. ) Some version of the Breeders will have an EP out on 4AD early

next year, to be followed by another full-length on Elektra later in 1997.

And about those two shows: After warming up in Santa Cruz, Kim Deal's

Breeders will play the next night at San Francisco's Herbst Pavilion, in a New

Year's eve slot opening for Primus (Protein will kick off the show). (Of note:

The New Year's show marks Primus' first with new drummer, Brain, with whom they

will go into the studio in March to record a new Primus album.)
